About Leanne

Helping local government end homelessness

I am an Australian government worker, writer and anthropologist convinced that we can all do better to make the world a fairer place.

My work and study over the last two decades, managing homelessness in Australian capital city settings and responding to large scale displacement following natural disasters in Asia has allowed me to respond to homelessness in many different forms.

In 2022, I was privileged to complete a Churchill Fellowship, investigating how councils can end homelessness while balancing responsibilities to the wider community.

I am firm in my belief that local government can play a pivotal role in ending homelessness. Devoted to enhancing knowledge and capacity in the sector, I work to educate and advocate for greater recognition and funding to bolster councils' efforts in prevention and finding ways to end homelessness.

Tools to make homelessness Everybody's Business

My report, Everybody’s Business offers practical guidelines and real-world case studies, equipping local government with a strategic framework focused on four key pillars:

  1. Know your local homelessness situation: Gain and utilise insights into your community's unique homelessness situation.
  2. Lead the narrative and drive collaboration: Change hearts and minds by crafting a compelling story and drive efforts to end homelessness.
  3. Organise your approach and your workforce: Develop a systematic approach to organizing both strategies and your workforce for maximum impact.
  4. Act to prevent and end homelessness:  Implement actions to prevent and find ways to end homelessness in your locality.

I acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land on which I live and work, the Wurundjeri people and pay my respect to Elders past, present and emerging. I acknowledge with sorrow the impacts of colonialism on Australia's First Nations people including unacceptable levels of homelessness, displacement, economic injustice, and discrimination.

Sovereignty has never been ceded.
